English Biography: Elizabeth Vidal et André Cognet, two artistes at the crossroads of past and future. Elizabeth Vidal and Andre Cognet, two gilt-edged values in today's operatic art, met at the singing school of the Paris Opera. They like to say that ever since, day by day, they have been constructing each other. For some years now a shared passion for French music has driven them to seek out forgotten works.
What is more, as partisans of a lively teaching method that is rooted directly in every day experience of the stage, they decided that, in addition to their blossoming careers, they would devote part of their time to the singers of tomorrow: as teachers for ten years now at the International Summer Academy of Nice and the Regional Conservatory of Rueil-Malmaison, they have given masterclasses to pupils from all over the world, notably at the Young Artist Studio of Miami Opera, the Performing Art Centre in Hong Kong, or theNational School of Music in Athens. Their recording Airs et duos d'amour de l'opera français released by Forlane, won the Massenet Prize of the International Record Academy in 2002. Elizabeth Vidal, undoubtedly one of the most elevated voices in the world, made her debut at the age of 23 on the stage of the Aix en Provence Festival alongside Jessye Norman in Ariadne aufNaxos, before consolidating her experience with John Eliot Gardiner in the troupe of Lyons Opera.
Since the 1990s she has been invited to the world's leading stages, Spoleto, Covent Garden, the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, Santiago in Chile, the BBC Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall, Toronto, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, La Fenice in Venice, the Lincoln Centre in New York, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Grand Theatre in Geneva and the Arena of Verona in such virtuoso roles as Olympia (Les Contes d'Hqffman), Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), the Queen of the Night, Euridice (Orphee aux Enfers - a DVD recording released in 2003), the Princess in L'Enfant et les Sortileges and Lakme, In 2000, after her great success in the role of Gilda alongside Leo Nucci's Rigoletto, she was the first Frenchwoman to be declared Best Coloratura Soprano by a jury of eminent Italian critics presided over by Giorgio Gualerzi, thus following in the footsteps of June Anderson (1990) and Sumi Jo (1995). More than fifty television broadcasts (Le Monde est a vous, Miisiques au cceur. Mezzo I'info, Arte, Victoires de la Musique) have made her one of the most popular French artistes of her generation and one recent film of Carmina Burana for TF1 (2006).
In addition to her recordings with Erato {L'Enfant et les Sortileges conducted by Armin Jordan and Scylla et Glaucis with John Eliot Gardiner), Decca (Tha'is, with Renee Fleming), Auvidis (L'Enfant et les Sortileges with Alain Lombard and a recital Romances et Chants d'oiseaux), Chant du Monde (title role in Manon by Auber): EMI (Carmen with Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu), she regularly collaborates with Forlane for her recitals or, in a more specialised repertory with Opera Rara (Cendrillon la Fee, 2002; Ginevra di Scozia, the title role recorded live at Trieste Opera, 2003, and two recitals of songs by Meyerbeer and Ricci to be released in 2004/05). In 2006, she received international recognition for her interpretation of queen of the night in a recording with Sir Charles Mackerras (Chandos) and int three other productions (Athens, Rome an d Reggio di Torino). She also was acclaimed in the Comtess adele of Le Comte Ory in the staging of Jerôme Savary in opera Royal of Wallonie under Alberto Zedda's direction. Among her forthcoming projects, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo for her recital of Airs virtuosos, as well as her debut as Juliette in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at Miami Opera, Zerbinetta in the original version of Ariadne aufNaxos at Nice Opera. She will be on 2005/2006 the Queen of the Night for the inauguration of the new opera stage in Athens, role that she will record in 2004 for Chandos under the baton Sir Charles Mackerras. André Cognet, brought to international stages (La Fenice, London Madrid, Leeds, Tel Aviv, Naples) by such French lyric baritone roles as Hamlet, Zurga in Les Pecheurs de Perles, Nilakantha in Lakme, the three Demons in Les Contes d'Hoffman and Herode in L'Enfance du Christ, achieved recognition jfrom the international press in the role of Escamillo.
After his immense success in this role in the Verona Arena in a production directed by Franco Zeffirelli, he repeated it in 2001/2002 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under the direction of Daniel Oren, at the Festival of Caligari, and also in Hong Kong and Leipzig, before making his debut as Lescaut in Puccini's Manon Lescaut in Tel Aviv (Zubin Mehta). He sang in Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortileges in Berlin (conducted by Serge Baudo), Nilakantha in Lakme in Karlsruhe, the title role in Hamlet in Prague Opera, L'Enfance du Christ (Herode) in Malaga and he made a much remarked debut as Mephisto in Faust at Miami Opera. All these roles show the range of his tessitura. His discography includes two recordings in La Fenice, Venice (Albert in Werther and the title role in Paisiello's II Re Teodoro), a cantata for solo baritone by Claude Ballif produced by Radio France, Jocaste by Charles Chaynes, Cendrillon for Opera Rara, the role of Herode in L'Enfance du Christ conducted by Serge Baudo for Forlane.
Among his recent performances, in addition to many concerts and recitals, (La Fenice, Antibes, Paris) should be mentioned the role of Capulet in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette for Miami Opera, the Grand Pretre in Samson et Dalila at the Herodaticus Festival in Athens, Escamillo in Carmen in Marseille Opera and Albert from Werther in Nice next to Rolando Villazon.
