|Philippe BERNOLD - Flute|
Following studies at the Paris Conservatoire, where he obtained several first prizes, notably in Alain Marion’s class, the flutist Philippe Bernold won first prize at the Jean-Pierre Rampal Competition in 1987. He was the first French musician to do since the start of the competition.
This prize paved the way for an international solo career with renowned artists and orchestras, from Rostropovitch to Rampal. Orchestras with which he performed include those of Paris, Lyon, Tokyo, Budapest, under the leadership of such conductors as Menuhin, Gardiner, Maazel or Nagano. Mr. Bernold’s performances have taken him from Paris to Tokyo, from Seoul to Moscow, and to the principal festivals around the world.
Until 1995, Philippe Bernold pursued his solo activities alongside that of principal flutist at the Opéra National de Lyon, a position to which he was named by John Eliot Gardiner at the age of 23 years old. Within this orchestra, he founded The Virtuosos of the Lyon Opera, with which he performed extensively thereafter. In addition, he has conducted orchestras such as Sinfonia Varsovia, the National Opéra Orchestra of Lyon, Baden Baden Philharmonic, “Ensemble orchestral de Paris”, Philharmonic Orchestra of Marseille, Bucheon Philharmonic, San Remo Symphonic Orchestra, and Cappella Istropolitana, with whom he was the first invited conductor since 2003 Philippe Bernold’s first CD in 1989 won him the Grand Prize of the Charles Cros Academy. Since then, he has recorded with Harmonia Mundi, EMI, and Lyrinx. His recordings with the pianist Alexandre Tharaud were awarded the coveted “Choc” from Le Monde de la Musique magazine and the “Diapason d’or.” He was similarly praised for his CD on the Harmonia Mundi label devoted to 20th century works for flute. Philippe Bernold is flute professor at the Lyon National Conservatory, chamber music professor at Paris Conservatory, and has taught at the Nice International Academy and the Kyoto Academy for the last 10 years.
